Blepharoplasty

Patients not only want to look better after eyelid surgery, but they want eyelids that provide normal function and comfortable vision.

Plastic surgery around the eyes and face requires significant attention to detail.  Dr. Jovkar, who is highly trained and experienced in eye microsurgery, is especially qualified to do eyelid and facial surgery. Besides extensive eye surgial experience, he has trained with well known oculoplastic surgeons.

The Eyelid Aging Process

As facial and eyelid skins age, they gradually lose their elasticity.  The combination of gravity, loss of elasticity by age, sun, health problems, and heredity create the excessive skin in the upper and lower eyelids, forming prominent folds of skin.

The tissues that hold the fat pads around the eye within the eye socket weaken with age. This causes the fat pads to bulge forward creating the bulge under the skin of the upper and lower lids. The thin membrane that holds the fat in place also weakens with age, allowing the fat to protrude into the lids.

This process leads to the formation of wrinkles, lines, puffiness, and "bags" around the eyes. The eyes are the first feature that we are drawn to when we meet someone face to face. The surrounding skin and muscles of the eyes also serves to convey facial expression and emotions.

What Is Blepharoplasty?

Cosmetic eyelid surgery, also known as Blepharoplasty or Eyelid Lift, is a surgical procedure which can restore a youthful and energetic appearance to your eyes. This surgical procedure consists of the removal of precise and appropriate amounts of excess skin and fat pockets in the upper and/or lower eyelids, at times with appropriate tightening of the associated structures.

Am I a good candidate for Blepharoplasty?

After a thorough medical and eye history exmination, Dr. Jovkar will discuss your goals and expecations and will determine whether or not you are a good candidate for the procedure.

Your Consultation Visit

During the initial consultation, Dr. Jovkar will ask you to describe your concerns and your wishes regarding the appearance of your eyelids. You will, using a mirror, show your expectations. Dr. Jovkar will then do a thorough exam of your eyelids, facial anatomy, and your eyes. Realistic and reasonable expectations and goals are very important.  He will note your past and present medical and eye history with particular attention to factors that affect the choice of the exact procedure, as well as factors that may affect the surgery and later recovery.

Blepharoplasty Procedure

This is an outpatient procedure. Prior to surgery, Dr. Jovkar will carefully mark the incision locations. The exact amount of tissue that will be removed will be marked. Subsequently local anesthesia will be given along with some sedation. An incision is then made and skin and fat are removed as needed. The incision is then closed with ultra-fine sutures. In the lower eyelid, the excess fat is removed either using a skin-muscle flap technique, or through the inner lining (conjunctiva) of the lower eyelid.

Recovery

Cold compresses will be applied to the surgical area and you will be cared for in the recovery room for a few hours after the surgery. You will then be instructed to continue to apply cold compresses over the next day and keep your head elevated while lying down to minimize swelling. The skin sutures are removed about 10 days later.

Risks

Significant complications are not frequent and most patients are pleased with the outcome. Although complications are infrequent, they may include infection, bleeding, swelling, delayed wound healing, asymmetry, dryness, or irritation of the eyes.
