Endophthalmitis

Prophylactic antibitoic in anterior chamber in cataract surgery:
A prospective study of 13,652 patients who underwent cataract surgery between 1999 and 2008 showed that prophylactic intracameral cefuroxime markedly reduced acute-onset endophthalmitis after cataract surgery . The study comprised of two groups, one group comprised of 6,595 patients did not receive cefuroxime. A second group of 7,057 patients received cefuroxime.
The first group had a statistically significantly higher incidence of postoperative endophthalmitis than the second group (P< .05).
Although this study is retrospective, and non-controlled and involves patients having surgery using different techniques at different time periods, it has the potential to change the standard of practice regarding antibiotic prophylaxis for cataract surgery.
