Expression and Probing of Meibomian glands
February 24, 2010
A significant number of patients with dry eyes have associated dysfunctional meibomian glands; these are glands on the eyelid margin which secrete the oily part of the tear film. Acute treatment of infection of meibomian gland secretions is using antibiotic/anti-inflammtory drops. Chronic maintenance treatment is by using hot compresses, and lid scrubs.
A new device from Tear Science is said to detect patients in whom meibomian gland expression might be helpful. This company is working on a device that automates the gland expression process. It will be interesting to see how these new devices will help patient with chronic meibomian problems and blepharits.
